My mother went through the same thing just six months after her husband died of cancer. She was pretty shaken, but it was caught about as early as it could be and they went in twice to scoop it out. I was living in Australia, she was in Texas.
Just about every time we spoke there was a weird air of guilt trip for me not being around…after all, cancer kills people all the time. And I admit I did feel a bit guilty: about not feeling more empathetic to her situation. Great, I thought, they caught it early, she gets it removed, no radiation, no chemo, just a few hospital visits and done. Which was the case.
Five years ago last month, still cancer free.
“Well,” she says in an email, “it’s been five years. That officially makes me a survivor! I know you were worried about it, but don’t. The mammogram came out negative. So don’t worry, okay? Love you. PS. If feel you want to talk about it, I am right here.”
